The History of Indian Subcontinent

History of clothing in subcontinent can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization or earlier. Indians have primarily worn clothing made up of cotton. India was one among the earliest places where cotton was cultivated, and used even before 2500 BC during the Harappan Era

The remnants of the old Indian clothing can be found from the figurines discovered from sites near the Indus valley civilization, the rock-carved sculptures, the cave paintings and human art forms found inside the temples and monuments.

These scriptures view the figure of human wearing clothes which could be wrapped around the body in various styles. Taking the examples of the Sari to that of Turban and Dhoti, the traditional Indian wear was mostly tied around the body, in various ways.
